ZigBee technology has seen rapid adoption in smart meters in North America in the last few years, moving quickly from early pilot programs in 2009, to being almost a de-facto solution for US HAN gateways. IMS Research, a market intelligence firm recently acquired by IHS, Inc., estimates that at the end of 2011, around 14 million ZigBee-enabled smart meters had been deployed in the US alone, kick started by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009. However, the growth in smart meter shipments of the last few years is set to slow as the federal stimulus funds start to run dry.
